Gloria In Excelsis Deo

Now, did she do it, or didn’t she? The story of Gloriagate goes on. The Monsoon Season certainly has been very wet till now for Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo (GMA in short, Wikipedia), President of the Republic of the Philippines (RP). US ex-president Nixon wasn’t brought down by the Watergate scandal, he was brought down by the foul language on some tapes. Will Gloria be brought down by her tapes? And not by her inability to address (worse, her complicity with) the raging Filipino magic-realism illegal numbers game “Jueteng" practices in the RP?

Ferdinand Edralin Marcos was brought down by the People’s Revolution of EDSA I in 1986, her predecessor Joseph Estrada (ERAP) was brought down over the Jueteng scandal by EDSA II in 2001. Will she be brought down by an EDSA III or just by plain tapes? At least no extra traffic jams on the Epifanio de los Santos Avenue in the traffic-plagued Metro Manila.

What is wrong with Gloria? The Sun*Star even opened a weblog about her. Is there a spell on the RP’s presidents (official hagiography here)? Except for José Rizal who was executed by the Spanish (and he wasn't even a president), it's one sad story of corruption. As an economist and ex-classmate of Clinton, GMA could have made the difference, finally. Maybe she will, at least she beated the ex-movie star, high school dropout and airhead Fernando Poe on May 10, 2004, in the most recent presidential elections. It took her quite some rides in her white fancy helicopter to Lugait at night, or to Cebu’s governor Garcia in Moalboal last year. She enjoyed the diving there, with Daniel (a Flemish Ostend dive master), I know. But running a country in distress takes a little bit more.
